HOBBIES HELP DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS

  • Do you have a hobby that you are passionate about?
  • Have you ever taken the time to realise the skills that you have developed through your hobbies?
  • What strengths have you developed and enhanced through your hobby that could help others?
  • If you are a leader, do you want an easier way of learning and embedding leadership skills that can make a difference to you, your team and your career?

Most people have a hobby that they are passionate about, through which they are learning new skills, reducing stress and having fun.  However, with conscious awareness, there are also benefits that can be transferred to their leadership role.

Individual sports and hobbies need good communication skills, an understanding of learning preferences and honest and effective feedback.  Team sports like football and hockey demonstrate diversity in a group, encouraging different skills and abilities, learning when to try something new, learning from mistakes, and that a leader does not have to be able to do all the roles but does need to be able to delegate, motivate and get the best from every individual.

With management resignations doubling since 2010, issues retaining managers up 32%, and nearly 60% of organisations struggling to recruit new managers (according to a CMI survey), finding a way to engage your talented managers is ever more important.

With all the stresses brought on by the tough market, we need to find a way to make leadership enjoyable again.  If people like their work, they are going to be more productive, creative and engaged.  This Workshop takes a passion for a hobby and shows how to transfer it into a passion for leadership.

GETTING RESULTS

Powerful leadership is about communicating in a way that allows people to learn, think, create and to solve problems effectively and quickly, inspiring better performance.  Encouraging people to come up with their own ideas and solutions is highly motivating for all involved.  In so doing, many of the big challenges faced by organisations can begin to be resolved: the lack of employee engagement, development of new leaders and continuous innovation.

Leadership training often provides information on new skills and their usage in the workplace, but doesn’t always allow for the practice and continual development to ensure they become embedded.  But you know from your hobbies that it’s practice that gives you the advantage.

So, to develop leadership skills more easily, why not take the advantage of developing your existing strengths, and learning how to utilise those in a different environment?

This workshop helps leaders to realise the skills and behaviours they already possess (and demonstrate through their hobbies), and to find ways to develop and transfer those into the workplace.

“… it really got me thinking. It enables people (including me) to think about their whole skillset rather than just limiting themselves to their ‘work’ skills.”

RECOMMENDATION

To develop effective leadership skills there are three distinct areas that should be considered.

Those are self awareness (eg. how you are motivated, make decisions and cope with stress), communication skills (inc motivating others, giving feedback and managing conflict), and inspiring team performance (through teamwork, diversity and solution-based creativity).

We provide a dedicated time out of the working environment to address these 3 aspects of effective leadership.  Attendees will leave the coaching with the confidence to apply what they have learned and be inspired and motivated to put it into action in the real world.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

To ensure the best results with the minimum of commitment, this can be provided as a half day or full day intensive programme. The full day includes MBTI for enhanced self-awareness, which would be conducted before the standalone workshop on how hobbies can be used for developing leadership skills.

  • Using Hobbies to Develop Leadership Skills (4 hours)         ©Assiem Ltd 2012
  • Workshop for attendees to identify their personality type, using MBTI (1.5 hours)
  • Understanding the different personality types (inc MBTI) in relation to your own (3 hours)
  • One area we excel in is getting delegates to commit to using and applying the ideas and techniques covered in the coaching.  After the workshop, Assiem Ltd will also email monthly tasks (for 6 months) to Leaders to use as exercises in meetings.

FAQs

I don’t currently have a hobby.  Even if you haven’t been able to get involved in your favourite hobby for a while, you can still participate in the workshop and understand more about your specific skills that can be transferred to the workplace.  And although not classified as a hobby, bringing up a family has its own set of skills that can be discussed.

Do I have to disclose my hobby to work colleagues? No.  If you don’t want to, you certainly don’t have to, although it is preferable.  Those who wish to discuss their hobbies can, otherwise we use example hobbies to be able to help you to recognise your skills.

RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT

The candidates will develop a greater understanding of themselves in the workplace, as well as some useful insights into effective communication skills and in appreciation of theirs and others’ ways of working and thinking.  This can transform the way a leader works with their team and the results it attains.   Using these principles, Karen has previous improved staff tenure by 26% and reduced the related turnover costs by c£450k in one year.

The programme addresses the fundamental and cost efficient leadership skills which organisations require to improve employee engagement and development, results on key business drivers and innovation for future success.

Additionally, given a recent management survey highlighted managers are spending 18-26% of their time on dealing with conflict; the workshop could quickly pay for itself by significantly reducing this percentage, giving you and your team managers back this valuable time to spend on more relevant activities.
